Hiya Folks,

Incase you have not noticed the site here is looking a little bit different. That is because the website is curently being improved. Things may be a little strange for a few days but here is what is changing and being improved.

  • The site is now compatable with handheld devices.  That's right you can now easily view and navigate the site from your blackberry or iphone (or other phones).
  • The Weather Page was updated to pull a feed directly from weather.com it provides much better and more accurate data.

  • The Classified ads section is also being better integrated and improved!

Forum (Discussion Board)

The forum is now much easier to post links, pictures, and videos. All you have to do is click a button. I will place a video up with detailed instructions but trust me it is much better!

The Calendar

The calendar will be easier to post to.  All anyone wanting to post an event will be to send an event invitation to an email address & it will be posted automatically!

The Directory

The directory has a gigantic list of improvements. If you are a business owner (or group leader)  it is now easier to customize your listing EXACTLY as you want it!

The Classified Ads

The classified ads are currently free to run! This will change in a few months to a very inexpensive fee! The ads are easier to post, maintain, and answer!

Ferrum College Criminal Justice Club Students Win at Regional Competition

E-mail Print PDF

Two Ferrum College Criminal Justice Club students returned as winners after attending the November 12-15th Region IV American Criminal Justice Conference in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Meredith Haynes won 1st place in the Upper Division (juniors and seniors) in Corrections, and Doug Currie won 1st place in the Lower Division (freshmen and sophomores) in Crime Scene Investigation.

William Osborne, program coordinator and associate professor of criminal justice, also was a winner, bringing back 1st place in the faculty and professional category in Juvenile Justice.

Other Ferrum criminal justice students attending the conference included Morgan Dillon, Damien Coyle, Meagan Hardy, Amanda Newton, Carley Boltz, Quwanisha Hines, Corey Brooks, Demetry Sawyers, Zack Divers, Ryan Bollings, James Long and Eric Thomas. The students competed in academic examinations, physical agility exercises, and crime scene investigation, and attended presentations by leaders in the criminal justice field.

Dr. Osborne says, “What I like most about the American Criminal Justice Association Conferences is that the organization is student focused and there is a good mix between theory and practice. There is an atmosphere of camaraderie and competition that is not seen at the more traditional conferences.  It is a good opportunity for students to build professional networks, establish connections with their peers, and see how they compare academically with their peers on both a regional and national level.”

Many of the students plan to submit papers for evaluation in a national competition to be held at a conference in Portland, Oregon, in March 2010.  Papers will be reviewed by a committee of faculty and professionals in the field.  The best papers will be announced at the conference and will qualify for publication in the Annual Lambda Alpha Epsilon Journal.

E-mail Print PDF

On Monday November 23, 2009 Congressman Tom Perriello stopped by Heavenly Manna in Rocky Mount. He toured the facility and spoke with Joyce Sigmon and the many volunteers there.

Heavenly Manna is an orgnaization which provides food to the needy in Franklin County, Virginia. Last year the food bank provided food to between 400 and 500 families per month. Now Heavenly Manna is providing food to over 700 families per month.

Heavenly Manna is supported by local churches, regional charity organizations, hunters, farmers, and many volunteers.

A single recent donation by an anonymous contributor has enabled Heavenly Manna to purchase a new walk in freezer. Mrs. Sigmon is pictured below with one of the men installing the new Freezer. The new freezer cost over $11,000.
