~ After Months of Hiding Social Agenda, McDonnell Pledges to Cut Off Planned Parenthood Funds ~
ALEXANDRIA - Late this week, two right-wing groups praised Bob McDonnell for taking a last-minute pledge to eliminate funding for women's health services provided by Planned Parenthood.
McDonnell, who had previously claimed he wouldn't push a social agenda as governor, made the pledge to defund Planned Parenthood during a Tuesday appearance on the right-wing Laura Ingraham show.
Planned Parenthood provides services for 30,000 Virginia women each year. Their cost effective health care services include gynecological exams, cancer screenings, birth control, and sexually transmitted infection testing and treatment. Traditionally, the Virginia budget has included between $250,000 to $500,000 for programs operated by Planned Parenthood that are not related to abortion services. Not a penny allocated to Planned Parenthood from state grants is allocated for providing abortion care.
In an e-mail to supporters on Friday, Family Foundation President Victoria Cobb praised McDonnell's last-minute pledge.

"At our Gala Monday evening, the largest applause line of my address to the crowd came when I said that pro-family Virginians expect that the next Governor of Virginia will submit a budget that ends the taxpayer subsidizing of Planned Parenthood," wrote Victoria Cobb. "In a radio interview the next day on the Laura Ingraham Show, Republican candidate for Governor Bob McDonnell stated that he would do just that.
Virginians for Life sent out an email to their supporters praising McDonnell's commitment to veto health care funding and pledged to hold him to his promises.
"Bob McDonnell has always been more interested in fighting culture wars than creating jobs," said Deeds spokesman Jared Leopold. "Now, just days before the election, his true colors are showing and his out-of-the-mainstream friends couldn't be happier. This is the danger of having a culture warrior running for governor - especially one as slick as Bob McDonnell"
